RAINBOW BRIDGE
Author unknown

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or
maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times
gone by.

The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to
them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the flying
over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous
reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the
beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life
but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....
We have compiled some of our favorite pet loss poems and want to share those
here with you. It is our hope that they bring you some comfort.
I STOOD BY YOUR BED LAST NIGHT
Author unknown

I stood by your bed last night, I came to have a peep.
I could see that you were crying, You found it hard to sleep.

I whined to you softly as you brushed away a tear,
"It's me, I haven't left you, I'm well, I'm fine, I'm here."

I was close to you at breakfast, I watched you pour the tea,
You were thinking of the many times, your hands reached down to me.

I was with you at the shops today, Your arms were getting sore.
I longed to take your parcels, I wish I could do more.

I walked with you towards the house, as you fumbled for your key.
I gently put my paw on you, I smiled and said "It's me."

You looked so very tired, and sank into a chair.
I tried so hard to let you know, that I was standing there.

It's possible for me, to be so near you everyday.
To say to you with certainty, "I never went away."

You sat there very quietly, then smiled, I think you knew ...
In the stillness of that evening, I was very close to you.

The day is over... I smile and watch you yawning
and say "Goodnight, God bless, I'll see you in the morning."

And when the time is right for you to cross the brief divide,
I'll rush across to greet you and we'll stand, side by side.

I have so many things to show you, there is so much for you to see.
Be patient, live your journey out ... then come home to be with me.
ANGELS ON FOUR PAWS

A few thousand years ago God called together his most learned and nurturing angels and gave them a
very special project.
He said unto them "There are those on Earth that doubt my love for them and are having difficulty
adhering to my commandments and keeping their faith in me, so I am sending you to Earth in the form
of four legged creatures that will be called dogs. I am calling you dogs so that my intentions will be
obvious, your name will be mine in reverse.

You will be endowed with powers that no human possesses.
You will be able to reach the unreachable and comfort those who feel that their days of comfort have
passed. When a human is feeling down and doubting his faith in me you must lick their tears away and
show them unconditional love. When a human is happy you must do something jovial to perpetuate
their happiness.

Most important of all when a human doubts their faith in me you must look to them for your well being,
strength, and safety as they should look to me for theirs.

I know that through your loving eyes and actions humans will learn by your example that the way to
happiness is through kindness at all times even when the circumstances warrant anger; compassion,
understanding and faithfulness is the example you will give them.

You will be called back to heaven long before they are so that they might feel the heartbreak that I feel
whenever one of them is lost to selfishness and greed. For those that keep you in their hearts for all of
the remaining days of their lives, you will be waiting to welcome them into the kingdom of Heaven. You
will be one of my greatest gifts to humanity and that is why only the best of angels have been chosen.

Go forth my best and brightest and teach my children what they already know but sometimes need to
be reminded of, my undying love for them so that more and more of them will pass through the gates
of my home with their souls not only intact but polished to a brilliant shine that will line every cloud that
an enlightened human eye sees.

And so it was that dogs were given to man as one of His most precious gifts to be cherished by all that
understood the message that they convey.
A Dog's Prayer 2

To Those Who Love & Those Who Love Me

When I am gone, release me, let me go-
I have so many things to see and do.
You must not tie yourself to me with tears,
Be happy that we had so many years.
I gave you my love, you can only guess
How much you gave me in happiness.

I thank you for the love you have each shown.
But now it is time I traveled alone.
So grieve awhile for me if grieve you must,
Then let your grief be comforted by trust,
It is only for a while that we must part,
So bless the memories within your heart,
I will not be far away, for life goes on,
So if you need me, call and I will come.
Though you can not see or touch me, I will be near.
And if you listen with your heart, you will hear
All my love around you soft and clear.
And then, when you must come this way alone,
I will greet you with a smile and "Welcome Home".
I'm Still Here
Author Unknown

Friend, please don't mourn for me
I'm still here, though you don't see.
I'm right by your side each night and day
and within your heart I long to stay.

My body is gone but I'm always near.
I'm everything you feel, see or hear.
My spirit is free, but I'll never depart

I'll never wander out of your sight-
I'm the brightest star on a summer night.
I'll never be beyond your reach-
I'm the warm moist sand when you're at the beach.

I'm the colorful leaves when fall comes around
and the pure white snow that blankets the ground.
I'm the beautiful flowers of which you're so fond,
The clear cool water in a quiet pond.

I'm the first bright blossom you'll see in the spring,
The first warm raindrop that April will bring.
I'm the first ray of light when the sun starts to shine,
and you'll see that the face in the moon is mine.

When you start thinking there's no one to love you,
you can talk to me through the Lord above you.
I'll whisper my answer through the leaves on the trees,
and you'll feel my presence in the soft summer breeze.

I'm the hot salty tears that flow when you weep
and the beautiful dreams that come while you sleep.
I'm the smile you see on a baby's face.
Just look for me, friend, I'm everyplace!
Letter From Your Pet In Heaven
Author Unknown

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say.
But first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.

I'm writing this from the Bridge. Here I dwell with God above.
Here there's no more tears of sadness. Here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I am with you every morning, noon and night.

That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you.
It's good to have you back again, you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, They'll be here later on."

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.

And when you lie in bed at night the day's chores put to flight,
God and I are closest to you... in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years,
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.

But do not be afraid to cry: it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
If I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.

But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
But together we can do it by taking one day at a time.

It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too;
That as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain;
Then you can say to God at night... "My day was not in vain."

And now I am contented... that my life was worthwhile.
Knowing as I passed along I made somebody smile.

God says: "If you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low;
Just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.

When you're walking down the street with me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind."

"And when it's time for you to go... from that body to be free.
Remember you're not going... you're coming here to me."
When Tomorrow Starts Without Me
Author Unknown

When tomorrow starts without me,
And I'm not there to see;
The sun will rise and find your eyes
All filled with tears for me.
I wish so much you wouldn't cry
The way you did today,
I know how much you loved me,
As much as I love you,
And each time that you think of me
I know you'll miss me too.
But when tomorrow starts without me,
please try to understand
That an angel came and called my name
And petted me with her hand.
She said my place was ready,
In Heaven far above,
And that I'd have to leave behind
All those I dearly love.

But,as I turned to heel away,
A tear fell from my eye,
For all my life I never thought
That I would have to die.
I had so much to live for,
So many sits and downs to do,
It seemed almost impossible,
That I was leaving you.
I thought about our lives together,
I know you must be sad,
I thought of all the love we shared,
And all the fun we had.
Remember when I'd nudge your hand,
And poke you with my nose?
The frisbee I would gladly chase,
The bad guy, I'd "bark and hold"
If I could relive yesterday,
Just even for awhile,
I'd wag my tail and kiss you,
Just so I could see you smile.
But then I fully realized,
That this could never be
For emptiness and memories
Will take the place of me.

And when I thought of treats and toys
I might miss come tomorrow,
I thought of you and when I did,
My dog-heart filled with sorrow.
But when I walked through Heaven's gate;
And felt so much at home

As God looked down and smiled at me,
From His beautiful throne.
He said,"This is eternity",
And now we welcome you,
Today your life on earth is past,
But here it starts anew.
I promise no tomorrow,
But today will always last;
For you see, each days' the same,
There's no longing for the past. Now you have been so
faithful
So trusting, loyal and true;

Though there were times you did things,
You knew you shouldn't do
But good dogs are forgiven,
And now at last you're free;
So won't you sit here by my side,
And wait right here with me?
So when tomorrow starts without me,
Don't think we're far apart
For every time you think of me,
I'm right there, in your heart.
Beyond The Rainbow
cg - 1995

As much as I loved the life we had and all the times we played,
I was so very tired and knew my time on earth would fade.
I saw a wondrous image then of a place that's trouble-free
Where all of us can meet again to spend eternity.

I saw the most beautiful Rainbow, and on the other side
Were meadows rich and beautiful --  lush and green and wide!
And running through the meadows as far as the eye could see
Were animals of every sort as healthy as could be!
My own tired, failing body was fresh and healed and new
And I wanted to go run with them, but I had something left to do.

I needed to reach out to you, to tell you I'm alright
That this place is truly wonderful, then a bright Glow pierced the night.
'Twas the Glow of many Candles shining bright and strong and bold
And I knew then that it held your love in its brilliant shades of gold.

For although we may not be together in the way we used to be,
We are still connected by a cord no eye can see.
So whenever you need to find me, we're never far apart
If you look beyond the Rainbow and listen with your heart.
I Loved You Best
Author Unknown

So this is where we part, My Friend,
and you'll run on, around the bend,
gone from sight, but not from mind,
new pleasures there you'll surely find.
I will go on, I'll find the strength,
life measures quality, not its length.
One long embrace before you leave,
share one last look, before I grieve.
There are others, that much is true,
but they be they, and they aren't you.
And I, fair, impartial, or so I thought,
will remember well all you've taught.
Your place I'll hold, you will be missed,
the fur I stroked, the nose I kissed.
And as you journey to your final rest,
take with you this...I loved you best.
Lend Me a Pup
Author Unknown

I will lend to you for awhile, a pup, God said,
For you to love him while he lives
and mourn for him when he's dead.
Maybe for twelve or fourteen years,
or maybe two or three
But will you, 'till I call him back,
take care of him for me.

He'll bring his charms to gladden you
and (should his stay be brief)
you'll always have his memories
as solace for your grief.
I cannot promise he will stay,
since all from earth return
But there are lessons taught below
I want this pup to learn.

I've looked the whole world over
in search of teachers true
And from the folk that crowd's life's land
I have chosen you.
Now will you give him all your love
Nor think the labour vain,
Nor hate me when I come to take my Pup back again.

I fancied that I heard them say
"Dear Lord Thy Will be Done,"
For all the joys this Pup will bring,
the risk of grief we'll run.
We'll shelter him with tenderness
we'll love him while we may

And for the happiness
we've known forever grateful stay!
But should you call him back
much sooner than we've planned,
We'll brave the bitter grief that comes,
and try to understand.
If, by our love, we've managed,
your wishes to achieve!
In memory of him we loved,
to help us while we grieve,
When our faithful bundle departs this world of strife,
Farewell Dear Master
Author Unknown

need you more each day, each month, each year. I never went hungry
need you more each day, each month, each year. I never went hungry
because you gave me dinner and gave me water each day.
because you gave me dinner and gave me water each day.

When the weather was bad I found comfort in the warmth and safety of
your home. I delighted you by learning tricks, but what you may not
have realized is that I loved learning from you because I lived to please
you.

The touch of your hand stroking my fur made my life worthwhile.
Though I barked at noises in the night, the postman's footsteps and
you became upset with me because I soiled the carpet, chewed on a you
became upset with me because I soiled the carpet, chewed on a piece of
furniture, or barked too much.  But do not feel bad about
piece of furniture, or barked too much.  But do not feel bad about
those times when you scolded me - I needed to learn right from wrong,
and I always understood when things weren't going your way or when
you'd had an unpleasant day at work. There is no need for you to harbor
guilt or remorse on my behalf.

You loved me and blessed me with more happiness than most animals
will ever know. Instead of wondering what you could have done
differently, remember the funny things I did and the happy times we
shared together. Though it is hard for you to understand, I was ready to
pass on from this life.  Our time together was short, but if we'd
had fifty years together, you still would have not been ready for me to
leave.

So please, Master, share your life with others.  Do not
refuse the opportunity to give another lucky pet the love you have given
me. No other animal will ever take my place in your heart, but there is
another one who needs you and will grow to love you as much as I did.
I am now at peace and no longer feel pain. You gave me a wonderful
home and a happy existence on this earth. So please be happy - go on
with your life and give your love to others.
Although I no longer share your world, I will always live in your
heart, and you in mine.

Farewell, Dear Master.
Treasured Friend
Author Unknown

I lost a treasured friend today
The little dog who used to lay
Her gentle head upon my knee
And share her silent thoughts with me...

She'll come no longer to my call
Retrieve no more her favorite ball
A voice far greater than my own
Has called her to His golden throne.

Although my eyes are filled with tears,
I thank Him for the happy years
He let her spend down here with me
And for her love and loyalty.

When it is time for me to go
And join her there, this much I know...
I shall not fear the transient dark
For she will greet me with her bark.
I Only Wanted You
Author Unknown

They say memories are golden
well maybe that is true.
I never wanted memories,
I only wanted you.
A million times I needed you,
a million times I cried.
If love alone could have saved you
you never would have died.

In life I loved you dearly,
In death I love you still.
In my heart you hold a place
no one could ever fill.

If tears could build a stairway,
and heartache make a lane,
I'd walk the path to heaven and bring you back again.

Our family chain is broken,
and nothing seems the same.
But as God calls us one by one,
the chain will link again.
A Parting Prayer
Author Unknown

Dear Lord, Please open your gates and call St Francis
to come and escort this beloved companion
across the Rainbow Bridge.
Assign him a place of honor,
for he has been a faithful servant
and has always tried to please me.
Bless the hands that send him to you,
For they do so in love and compassion
freeing him from pain and suffering.
Grant me the strength not to dwell on my loss.
Help me remember the details of his life with the love he has shown me
And grant me the courage to honor him by sharing these memories with others.
Let him remember me well
Let him know I will always love him
And when it is my time to pass over into your paradise
Please allow him to accompany those that will bring me home.
Thank You Lord
For the gift of his companionship
and the time we've had together.
And Thank You Lord
For granting me the strength
To give him to you now.
Peace.
Tribute To A Best Friend
Author Unknown

Sunlight streams through window pane
unto a spot on the floor....
then I remember,
it's where you used to lie,
but now you are no more.

Our feet walk down a hall of carpet,
and muted echoes sound....
then I remember,
It's where your paws would joyously abound.

A voice is heard along the road,
and up beyond the hill,
then I remember it can't be yours....
your golden voice is still.

But I'll take that vacant spot of floor
and empty muted hall
and lay them with the absent voice
and unused dish along the wall

I'll wrap these treasured memorials in a blanket of my love
and keep them for my best friend until we meet above.
The Boy
Author Unknown

There's sadness now, we cry, we weep,
our gentle giant's gone to sleep.
It's quiet, yet we hear his sound,
his feet still dragging along the ground.

He made all welcome, no bark, no growl,
just the largest grin, then he'd fetch his towel.
He asked for nothing but gave his all,
right to the end, to that final call.

When it's time for us to take that final ride
that fearful trip to the other side,
our journey there will bear no strife,
we know he'll be waiting, as he was in life.

the loneliness you'll understand.
No more will follow, they couldn't compare
to that giant, gentle, big white bear.
God's Garden
Author Unknown

God looked around his garden,
And found an empty place.
He then looked down upon the earth,
And saw your tired face.

He put his arms around you,
And lifted you to rest.
God's garden must be beautiful,
He always takes the best.

He knew that you were suffering,
He knew you were in pain.
He knew that you would never,
Get well on this earth again.

He saw the road was getting rough,
And the hills were hard to climb.
So he closed your weary eyelids,
And whispered, "Peace be thine."

It broke our hearts to lose you,
But you didn't go alone.
For part of us went with you,
The day God called you home.
May I go?
Author: Susan A. Jackson

May I Go?
Do you think the time is right?
May I say goodbye to pain-filled days and endless lonely nights?
I've lived my life and done my best, an example tried to be.
So can I take that step beyond, and set my spirit free?
I didn't want to go at first, I fought with all my might.
But something seems to draw me now to a warm and living light.
I want to go, I really do; it's difficult to stay.
But I will try as best I can to live just one more day.
To give you time to care for me and share your love and fears.
I know you're sad and afraid, because I see your tears.
I'll not be far, I promise that, and hope you'll always know,
That my spirit will be close to you wherever you may go.
Thank your so for loving me, You know I love you too,
And that's why it's hard to say goodbye and end this life with you.
So hold me now just one more time and let me hear you say,
Because you care so much for me, you'll let me go today.
Author Unknown

We have a secret, you and I
that no one else shall know,
for who but I can see you lie
each night in fire glow?
And who but I can reach my hand
before we go to bed
and feel the living warmth of you
and touch your silken head?
And only I walk woodland paths
and see ahead of me,
your small form racing with the wind
so young again, and free.
And only I can see you swim
in every brook I pass
and when I call, no one but I
can see the bending grass.
